FEature-Brackets

Last night, July 16th, was the last night of group play and couldn’t have been more exciting. Brek Shea saved the USA from a draw with a late goal and won Group C outright while Cuba took care of Belize 4-0. As you can see from the graphic above (which can also be found on the Gold Cup website) the 2 sets of quarterfinals will be played in Atlanta and Baltimore.

We are extremely excited to be covering the quarterfinal action coming to our great city and we can’t wait to bring it to you! Panama takes on Cuba at 3:30pm  and Mexico faces Trinidad & Tobago at 6:30pm. Both of these games will be played at the Georgia Dome this Saturday, July 20th.

In case you aren’t familiar with the teams involved we can give you a quick overview. Panama is going into this quarterfinal match still hungry after their surprise, upset, victory against mammoth side Mexico. The game is sure to be a great one as they face a very confident Cuban side that crushed Belize 4-0 just yesterday. It will be a great opening game that leads us into the main event!

Mexico, who are favorites every year, are trying to re-establish themselves as a heavyweight contender after their surprise first game loss to Panama. But after a 2 goal shutout victory against Canada and a 3-1 victory over Martinique, El Tri will be going into this weekend’s match confident of their ability. Trinidad & Tobago are an even more interesting story. After a draw with El Salvador and a 2-0 loss to Haiti, the Trinidadians got their act together to not only upset, but shutout a well-skilled Honduras side 2-0. Trinidad will be looking for a big game from Kenwyne Jones as they will be heavy underdogs against Mexico on Saturday. If you were to just look at the countries you would assume Mexico would be the easy victor. But what this Gold Cup tournament has shown us is that anything can happen and every David has a chance at slaying Goliath!

So the stages are set and we’ll see who will be advance to the Semi’s after this weekend! You can catch all the highlights of the tournament on the Gold Cup Video Highlights page HERE  We’ll see you this Saturday!
