Directed and written by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, Bad Moms observes the lives of three overworked, under appreciated mothers, who are breaking themselves to appear to have ‘normal’ lives.
Amy (Mila Kunis), Carla (Kathryn Hahn), and Kiki (Kristen Bell) are three mothers who find each other and form a bond after being continuously put down by the three-headed monsters that run the PTA: Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate), Stacy (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Vicki (Annie Mumolo). The ring leader Gwendolyn is a vicious, power-hungry, control freak who forces parents to follow her ways or pay the price.
First we had ‘Clueless’, then we had ‘Mean Girls’, and now we have Bad Moms, which is not only hilarious, but to sum it up in short: Its Mean Girls 3.0.
This film is loaded with comedy, good comedy, and not the forced kind that I talk about where people just yell as many buzz words as possible in hopes to getting a laugh. Amy, Carla, and Kiki confront social norms and do it in a way that at some times are serious, but most often are softened with humorous one-liners.
In my opinion, Kathryn Hahn stole the show in this film. Mila Kunis’ character is more or less the lead, but Hahn’s comedy was off the charts.
Amy works for a startup, has two overachieving children, and a husband in real estate. They appear to be the perfect family, but her son is entitled, her daughter is oversensitive, and her husband while not only lazy, is exhibiting signs of infidelity.
Carla is a single mom who admits that she’s not the greatest but loves her son a lot. She’s fearless, lewd, vulgar, and to say her outfits are provocative could be an understatement at times.
Kiki is a stay at home mom with five children and a husband that expects her to do it all. Alone. Aside from watching all of the children he expects for his needs to be taken care of too. For all three women, things are just, too much.
When the trio revolt, their ultimate turning point is when Amy gives Gwendolyn the shaft publicly at a PTA meeting. The comedy that ensues from there is simply amazing. This is a must-see comedy for anyone that’s a mother, has a zest for comedy, or if you just want a good laugh this weekend. Besides, there’s a whole new set of quotes and one-liners to be remembered. Especially if you were a fan of the “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” and “Don’t have sex, you’ll get pregnant and die” type of quotes. Christina Applegate will not disappoint.
Bad Moms gets a 9 out of 10. If you are indeed a mom, this should be seen with a group of girlfriends, not your children. The comedy and some of the sexual topics are way to detailed and lewd for child accompaniment. When I say this is a ‘must-see’, I mean go see this tonight. If you don’t see this tonight, then you go see it this weekend.
