Atlanta United announced it has sent Lagos Kunga to Phoenix on loan for the duration of the 2020 USL season.

Kunga, 21, played with Atlanta United’s academy and signed as a Homegrown Player on June 17, 2017. He made one appearance for the First Team for his Atlanta United debut while on a short-term loan in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match against Miami FC on June 28, 2017. In 2019, Kunga played two games with ATL UTD 2 in the USL Championship before being loaned to Memphis 901 FC. With Memphis, Kunga played in 22 matches including 10 starts and scored one goal. He was voted “Man of the Match” multiple times throughout his stay and was a widely recognized face in the community.

I vehemently disagree with his departure as the club signed a similar player of the exact same position the next day. Atlanta is fortunate enough to have extremely talented homegrown players but the lads don’t seem to be a part of the club’s long-term vision. But being loaned out for a second straight season doesn’t bother the young starlet one bit. “It’s a marathon,” the young Decatur native said confidently. The ever-smiling optimist arrived Wednesday to his new club.

Kunga arrives in Arizona to a club with no shortage of wingers, but as he stated, the young lad always welcomes a challenge. There’s no doubt he’ll fit in just fine and quickly become a part of the community, as he did in both Atlanta and Memphis.
