Georgia On My Mind: Celebrating Ray Charles is the fifth and final performance of the Jazz Roots: A Larry Rosen Jazz Series. The 2013-2014 Jazz Roots show is presented by the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Foundation in partnership with presenting sponsor Kia Motors. The performance is Wednesday February 26, 2014 at 8:00 pm.

Ray Charles was one of the best of his time. He overcame many obstacles in his life to create the music he loved. This concert will celebrate the great Ray Charles as an all-star cast of performers brings his beloved music back to life on the Cobb Energy Centre stage.

Take 6 is a ten-time GRAMMY winning acapella group that has traveled world-wide to show of their musical genius. The six voices combine to create innovative music and delectable sound.  Clint Holmes has been performing for more than 20 years. He grew up with music in his blood and honed in his talents to create the voice we hear today.

As a six-time GRAMMY nominee, Nnenna Freelon has earned her spot in the world of jazz. She has her own original sound that will add excitement to the mix. She is also a strong advocate for education.  Coming from gospel roots of Memphis, Tennessee, Kirk Whalum has an unmistakable tenor sound that is all his own. His voice has earned him 11 GRAMMY nominations along with a win.

They are being joined by three groups of musicians that call Atlanta home; Clark Atlanta University Big Band and Singers, members of the Ebenezer Baptist Church Choir and the three local musicians Sonny Emory, Billy Hatcher and Mark Miller will provide the rhythm section for the orchestra.

Double Time:  music and a mission The JAZZ ROOTS series offer a unique educational opportunity for a host of young music lovers. Unique to this concert will be the invitation to 1,000 high school music students to attend the rehearsal for this brand new musical tribute to Ray Charles.  Normally for each of the concerts, 200 high school students from schools in the Atlanta region will attend the shows, as well as enjoy the privilege of attending pre-concert sound checks and participating in special Q&A sessions with the performers. Additionally artists from the various concerts will visit schools to offer a master class for music students. The series’ media sponsor is 91.9 – WCLK-FM, “The Jazz of the City”.

Georgia on my Mind will be on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets range in price from $29.00 to $89.00 per person.
