Atlanta United kicks off the 2022 Major League Soccer regular season on Sunday when it hosts Sporting Kansas City at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The match, presented by Mercedes-Benz, is set to kick-off at 3 p.m. ET and will be nationally broadcast on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
- Atlanta owns an all-time record of 1-1-1 against Sporting KC: 0-1-0 at home and 1-0-1 on the road in the series. Atlanta won the last meeting 3-0 on May 5, 2019 at Children’s Mercy Park behind a brace from Josef Martínez and a goal from Ezequiel Barco.
- Atlanta and Sporting KC were the top two teams in possession in 2021, as Atlanta finished first at 57.5 % and SKC finished second at 55.2 %. The two teams also tied for second in passing accuracy in MLS last season at 85.5 %.
- Since Gonzalo Pineda’s appointment as head coach on Aug. 12, 2021, Atlanta finished tied for the most points in the league to finish the season with 33. Pineda enters his first full season with Atlanta with a 7-3-3 record.
- Sunday will mark the club’s first MLS season opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and just the second home season opener in club history after 2017’s inaugural match at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
