We had to wait three years for a second Dune but it was well worth it. When I say well worth it I mean Denis Villeneuve should be in charge of directing all sci-fi films from now on.

Dune: Part Two is a visual masterpiece and is a must-view in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theaters (I wasn’t paid for that by the way). It’s an immersive experience that lets you feel every scene in its entirety. Not just the giant sandworms or the clashing of swords, but the all-important Michael Bay-level explosions.

Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) reunites with Chani (Zendaya), Stilgar (Javier Bardem), and the other Fremen as he aims for acceptance amongst their people while simultaneously protecting Arrakis from the greed of the Harkonnens. Their sole interest in the planet of Arrakis was to harvest its spice.

The second installment in the series explores multiple themes, including romantic and maternal love, revenge, and the ever-popular conflict of good and evil. On one side, the Fremen represent humanity, fighting as a collective force in an effort to keep the native people of Arrakis alive. On the other, we have the Harkonnen, who don’t shy away from their violent, greedy, corrupt reputation.

The film begins with Paul and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) in the middle of the desert with the Fremen, specifically, Chani and Stilgar. While the group is attempting to find shelter they hear the unexpected arrival of a Harkonnen patrol. The first hour or so dives deeper into the world of the Fremen. We learn about their customs, beliefs, and what it would take for Paul to earn their trust. But not all Fremen are the same. Chani and those close to her are from the North, while Stilgar and those close to him are from the South. Fremen from the southern region are very religious and believe that Paul, who later earns the name Usul, is the Messiah. That isn’t so much of an easy pill to swallow for those from the North.

The Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV (Christopher Walken) isn’t aware that Paul Atreides is alive. It was his daughter, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), who made the discovery and took close counsel from the Bene Gesserit. The emperor is aging and behind closed doors, his ability to lead has been in question. Over time, the truth will be exposed and dark secrets will begin to surface.

You’ll see a lot of growth from the women in this second film, especially Lady Jessica and Chani. Chani is courageous and takes time to build up her trust in Paul and his ambitions while also affording good counsel. I love the fact that she’s not portrayed as some simpy love interest, but a warrior that just happens to have feelings for Paul. Her focus has always been her people and it does not sway in this film. Lady Jessica takes on a new role and responsibility while also becoming a key leader and figurehead amongst the natives. Her support of Paul will become pivotal as time goes on.

Dune: Part Two gets a 9.5 out of 10. I could go a bit deeper into the story but, for the sake of those who haven’t read the books, I don’t want to spoil anything. My only complaint with the film (which really is just something I noticed, not an actual complaint) was the handful of scenes that felt rushed. They would mention going to a specific location and then they just show up there in the next scene. Aside from that, the movie is cinema gold. The runtime is 2 hours and 46 minutes but the story will keep you engaged throughout. The PG-13 rating is accurate as there’s violence (mainly gun battles but there are a few knife fights) and bouts of strong language. The film was phenomenal and if you can’t see it in Dolby Cinema, then at the very least, see it in IMAX.

Dune: Part Two will be in theaters on March 1.
