A fast-moving, drug-fueled thrill ride, Yadang: The Snitch explores the drug trade in Korea. With addicts everywhere in sight, a goal-driven prosecutor only cares about finding the sellers, not the users. In this fast-paced thriller from director Hwang Byeong-gug, a snitch ends up getting more than he bargained for, unraveling the balance between pleasing law enforcement and being the saving grace of arrested criminals.

The film traces the steps of a snitch named Kang (Kang Ha-neul) and Prosecutor Ku (Yoo Hae-jin) as their two worlds collide. Kang was falsely arrested and learned how to adapt during his prison stint. Ku comes up with the genius plan to use Kang as his snitch. It’s beneficial for Kang because he can make money and stay out of jail while Prosecutor Ku garners media attention for arresting drug lords. Korea has 2500 prosecutors with only 1% becoming high-ranking chief prosecutors, which forces the other 99% to resign within 10 years. This plan to Kang as his snitch was created out of desperation, as Prosecutor Ku is in his 10th year.

Ku was climbing the ranks quickly and seemed pretty much unstoppable, until his chase for glory overflowed into another district. His chase for media attention and glory had him cross paths with Captain Oh Sang-je, aka Jade Emperor (Park Hae-joon). His disdain for addicts (or “junkies” as they say in the film) and desire for dealers was simple: “Catch 100 users, and there’ll be 100 more the next day,” which is why he aimed higher to take down the ring leaders. As the saying goes, “there’s no honor among thieves”, and the plot takes enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.

Known for the popular Netflix series Squid Game, Kang Ha-neul did an incredible job in this film. His dialogue, acting, and character arc were brilliant. He not only provided the drama and humor, but when he needed to, he was down to fight. The action scenes were fantastic, and his portrayal of an untouchable playboy was comedy gold. The film also starred Ryu Kyung-Soo and Chae Won-Bin.

The amount of action on display is what you’d expect from Well Go USA Entertainment. I’m yet to find a film they’ve latched onto that didn’t have some form of destruction in it, and honestly, they’re better for it. If it wasn’t a man getting set on fire, it was someone getting stabbed. There were car crashes, explosions, and enough drug use to repel any thoughts or consideration of trying. The film had it all.

Yadang: The Snitch gets a 9 out of 10. This one definitely isn’t suitable for kids. Also, the constant usage of the term “junkies” and visuals of people injecting drugs and passing out may be triggering for anybody battling addiction. There’s also an oddly placed orgy that’s briefly shown that wasn’t necessary. Outside of that, the film is hilarious. It might feel long for those who aren’t used to watching international films. You’ll be reading subtitles for two hours, so get comfortable. The film will be screening in the following theaters in Atlanta and D.C.:

  • Atlanta – Lawrenceville, GA: AMC Sugarloaf Mills 18
  • Atlanta – Johns Creek, GA: Regal Medlock Crossing
  • Baltimore – Hanover, MD: Cinemark Egyptian 24
  • Washington, DC – Fairfax, VA: Regal Fairfax Towne Center
