On Thursday, August 22, Kula Project, a Roswell-based non-profit with a mission to eradicate both local and worldwide hunger through innovative farming techniques, will host #FORTHEFARMER. During this event, several of Atlanta’s top restaurants will donate 20 percent of their sales to support Kula Project’s farmer sponsorship programs in Kenya and Rwanda.
This great day of food, drink, living and giving will take place at several restaurants including Table & Main | a southern tavern, The Optimist, Chicken and the Egg, King + Duke, Little Alley Steak, The Salt Factory Pub, Farm Burger Dunwoody, Opulent, The Iberian Pig, Sugo Restaurant and Double Zero.
“We are overwhelmed by the support of the Atlanta dining community,” stated Kula Project founder, Sarah Buchanan. “So many of us are so fortunate to have such delicious dining options and for one day, the choice to dine out will directly benefit those across the globe trying to grow their own food.”
Sarah derived the idea of the #FORTHEFARMER event while serving guests at Roswell, Ga. restaurant, Table & Main, where she also developed an on-site sustainable garden in a barren drainage ditch. Her integration and service to Table & Main and other community restaurants left them eager to give back.
“Sarah has been a faithful team member here at Table & Main since our opening and is an inspiration not only in her service here, but worldwide with Kula Project,” stated Table & Main owner, Ryan Pernice. “It is our pleasure and the least we can do to support her efforts to drive food sustainability.”
Proceeds from the evening will benefit Kula Project’s work in Kenya this October, where they begin their work with Phoebe, a Kenyan woman who uses the food from her 15-acre farm to feed the children in her orphanage. Kula Project, in partnership with Just One Foundation, will work with her over the next several months to install drip irrigation and rain water collection, which will allow the farm to be productive through the dry season.
The trip will also include a stop in Rwanda, where Kula will work with Land of a Thousand Hills’ head agronomist, Manu, to install drip irrigation on their seedling farmers in effort to prevent crop losses due to water inefficiencies.
