In Draft Day, directed by Ivan Reitman, Cleveland Browns General Manager Sonny Weaver Jr. (Kevin Costner) has the number 1 pick in the NFL Draft. With pressure on his shoulders to build a championship team he has to weigh his options on taking who’s best for his franchise, his coach, or the Browns fans. The focus was on 3 different players, all with different characteristics, who had loads of potential but each had at least 1 major drawback. During the film we discover Sonny has a secret relationship with Payroll/Accountant Ali (Jennifer Garner) who comes to his aid during his times of stress.
There’s just enough of a storyline that if you aren’t familiar with American football, you’d still be able to follow along. This movie is definitely for the football enthusiast and if you are familiar with the sport you’ll be able to appreciate the suspenseful build-up. I don’t want to ruin the ending but I can say it was definitely not predictable (which I’m happy about). I can give this a 8 out of 10. It’s Kevin Costner… you have to like Kevin Costner 😉 Plus you get to see a ton of sports cameos like Chris Berman, John Gruden, Mel Kiper, Deion Sanders for example. If this film has any accuracy as to how draft days are handled, I can do without all that stress 😛
Be sure to watch the 2014 NFL Draft this Thursday, May 8, starting at 8pm!
