Named an Atlanta Ballet “tour de force” by ArtsATL, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s ethereal production of “Roméo et Juliette” is back by popular demand for the 14-15 Season. A startlingly fresh take on the well-known Shakespearean masterpiece, “Roméo et Juliette” embodies the titillating power of young, forbidden love. Atlanta Ballet will perform the production for a seven-show, two-weekend run, February 6-14 at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre – just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Maillot, who is also resident choreographer at Les Ballet de Monte-Carlo, premiered the work with the French company in 1999. It has since been performed in the U.S. by Pacific Northwest Ballet and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre to critical acclaim.
Ballet-Dance Magazine described it as “quirky, artistically innovative, intelligent, intellectually and visually stimulating, endlessly interesting.” The Seattle Times said, “It’s a remarkable work…like no ‘Romeo and Juliet’ ballet you’ve seen before: It’s intricate, often achingly beautiful, and never simply pretty.”
Atlanta Ballet presented the Southeastern premiere in February 2014. The emotional, cinematic work was described by ArtsATL as “smart, beautiful, and epic,” and the Backstage Beat deemed it “spectacular.” ‘Romeo et Juliette’ is a triumph for Atlanta Ballet,” said Atlanta arts writer Cynthia Bond Perry in a review for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “With choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot’s production, the company’s quest to build a sleek artistic profile is more fully realized than ever…Atlanta Ballet has again surpassed itself.”
The coveted roles of Romeo and Juliette will be reprised by Atlanta Ballet company dancers Christian Clark and Alessa Rogers, respectively.
