Atlanta United today selected midfielder Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu of Harvard University in the third round, No. 46 overall, and goalkeeper Alex Kapp of Creighton University in the fourth round, No. 68 overall, during the final two rounds of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. Rounds No. 1 and 2 were held on Friday, Jan. 13 in Los Angeles. Rounds No. 3 and 4 were conducted today via conference call.
Wheeler-Omiunu, 22, was a four-year starter at Harvard, compiling 64 appearances, 61 starts, with four goals and six assists. He earned All-Ivy League First Team honors twice while being named team captain during his junior year. The Massachusetts native started at least 14 games each season, and in his sophomore year set a career-high in points (7) when he scored two goals and added three assists. In 2016 Wheeler-Omiunu scored one goal and recorded two assists while starting all 15 games for the Crimson.
Kapp, 22, played the 2016 season as a graduate student at Creighton University following four years at Boston College, one of which he redshirted. He played in 62 collegiate matches, making more than 200 saves between his time in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big East. While with the Eagles, Kapp finished top-5 in saves in the conference in each of his three seasons as Boston College’s starting goalkeeper. His senior year, Kapp helped the Eagles reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. During his only year at Creighton, he set a career-high with 78 saves over 23 starts. Kapp piloted the Blue Jays to the finals of the Big East Tournament and the third round in the NCAA Tournament.
In the first two rounds of the SuperDraft, Atlanta United selected defender Miles Robinson from Syracuse University with the No. 2 overall pick and midfielder Julian Gressel of Providence College with the No. 8 overall pick.
