Atlanta United returns to action Wednesday night against United Soccer League side Charleston Battery in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. This is the first U.S. Open Cup match in Atlanta United history. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST and the match will be streamed live at www.atlutd.com/live.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is the third longest-running soccer tournament in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 100-plus-year-old single-elimination tournament. In 2017, 99 teams from 30 different states will compete, making this year’s field the largest in modern-era U.S. Open Cup history.
Charleston advanced through the second and third rounds with wins over Atlanta Silverbacks 2-1 and Jacksonville Armada 1-0. Wednesday’s match marks the first time the two clubs will meet competitively. Atlanta defeated Charleston 2-1 when they played during the 2017 MLS preseason in February at the Carolina Challenge Cup.
