Atlanta United announced yesterday that it signed forward Yosef Samuel to a Short-Term Agreement for the club’s match against the Battery in today’s U.S. Open Cup match.
Atlanta begins the 2018 U.S. Open Cup with a matchup against Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League. The two sides played in the fourth round of last year’s U.S. Open Cup, with Atlanta claiming a 3-2 victory at Fifth Third Bank Stadium behind goals from Kevin Kratz, Josef Martínez, and Brandon Vazquez. In league play, Atlanta sits atop the Supporters’ Shield Standings with 29 points and is coming off a 3-1 win against Philadelphia on Saturday night. Josef Martínez scored his MLS-leading 12th goal and his fifth career MLS hat trick, tying the all-time league record in only 34 games.
Charleston advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup with consecutive 1-0 wins against South Georgia Tormenta FC (PDL) and Elm City Express (NPSL). Atlanta United loanees scored the winning goals in both matches, as Patrick Okonkwo’s first professional goal beat South Georgia and 2018 MLS SuperDraft pick Gordon Wild’s goal lifted Charleston past Elm City.
