Atlanta United drew New York City FC 2-2 Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium. Atlanta fought back from one-goal deficits twice, thanks to goals from forwards Josef Martínez and Dom Dwyer.
Both sides had their share of chances in the first half but it was New York City who opened the scoring in the 37th minute. Taty Castellanos was then seen through on goal by a pass from Talles Magno and the Argentinian slotted in his ninth goal of the season.
Atlanta found a response in the 56th minute through a diving header from Martínez. Thiago Almada played a one-two with Luiz Araújo before taking a touch and sending a ball to the penalty spot. The Venezuelan dove to get on the end of it, sending a header past Sean Johnson for his fifth goal of the 2022 MLS campaign.
New York City re-captured its one-goal lead two minutes later. Maxi Moralez attempted to run through the Atlanta back line and was met by a tackle from Aidan McFadden. The loose ball fell to Magno, who squared a pass for Castellanos to score on a first-time shot in the 58th minute.
Dwyer and Ronaldo Cisneros, a pair of substitutes, combined to draw Atlanta level in the 86th minute. Alan Franco found a channel to move the ball up to Cisneros, who used his body to turn the defender and run toward the byline. The Mexican forward cut a pass back to the middle of the box to Dwyer. The MLS veteran placed his first-time shot on the inside of Johnson’s left post, freezing the goalkeeper for his fourth MLS goal of the season.
Atlanta (5-5-5, 20 points) returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to take on Austin FC for the first time in the club’s history on Saturday, July 9 (7:00 p.m., ESPN+, Bally Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).
