Michigan State University is gearing up for an exciting season and will be relying heavily on one of its veterans, Malik Spencer, to lead by example. Spencer’s 2024 season was upended by injury after starting nine games.

Although his junior season was cut short, Spencer didn’t waste time harping on the negative. Instead, he utilized that time to learn. “I learned that everything about ‘the process’ matters. Don’t downplay anything about it.”

Ready to start 2025 with a fresh slate, “The Hitman,” as he’s called, has relished his leadership role and is excited about the team’s chemistry.

“The biggest difference (from last year) is that I feel like we are smarter and more connected with each other,” Spencer began. He underscored a major advantage they have on defense in stability. Returning for a second year in the defensive scheme has fostered better communication, a deeper understanding of roles, and stronger relationships within the unit.

If you’ve ever had the chance to talk to Malik, then you know he’s poised for greatness. Not only does he possess that “it” factor that separates him from the rest, but he also doesn’t shy away from a challenge. Whether that be mastering defensive plays or mentoring new players, there’s a level of joy and fulfillment in his work.

“Mentoring the younger guys and transfers in the secondary has been smooth,” Spencer notes of the recruits. “I feel like it helps everybody, even me, to keep them updated and locked into adjustments. Something I like about our group is that we all learn from each other, and players keep pride in check.”

In 2024, he started the first nine games at safety, recording 44 tackles, one interception, and a forced fumble, before missing his final three games to injury. This season, he has some very specific goals in mind. “Four picks, four forced fumbles,” he notes. He’ll get his first opportunity to achieve his goal this Friday, Aug. 29, when Michigan State hosts the Western Michigan Broncos.

Spencer expressed a clear sense of readiness as the season approaches. He made improving his man coverage skills a priority this offseason and emphasized the importance of mastering his defensive cover schemes. We already know he has elite athleticism and instincts, and now that he’s prioritizing his schemes and embracing his role as a veteran, he may be the biggest impact player in the Big Ten Conference.
