Caped Crusader Season 2 follows The Batman as he tries to clean up Gotham’s crime. A new villain arises to everyone’s surprise and hatches a secret plan to take over the city and upend stability in Gotham.
Last week at San Diego Comic-Con, Prime Video revealed Matthew Needham as the voice of “The Joker” during the Batman: Caped Crusader Season Two panel. The panel for the highly anticipated animated noir series kicked off the world premiere screening of the first episode from Season Two.
The first episode, “Brute Force,” sees all eyes in Gotham glued to the trial of Rupert Thorne. While the city is focused on Mr. Thorne, Batman is focused on the crime taking over the city. With the short-tempered Edward Nygma in charge, the gun-crazed villain goes on a crime spree, hell-bent on retribution. By the end of the episode, we learn that Rupert Thorne and Eddie “The Riddler” Nygma are only the beginning of Gotham’s villain woes.
This season, Batman: Caped Crusader gets an even deeper storyline than the first season. We have more villains, new characters, and, surprisingly, added vulgarity to this season. Season 2, which spans 10 episodes, covers everything from cults and crooked cops to unexpected allies saving the day.
There’s a lot to be said for this series that picked up almost two years to the day from its initial premiere in 2024. We don’t see much of Bruce Wayne this season, and instead, get more of the caped crusader that we’ve been hoping for. With his utility belt and affinity for hand-to-hand combat, Batman dares to take on Gotham’s worst in an effort to unravel a complex plan to destroy the city from within.
The series continues its balancing act of paying homage to the classic noir imprint while featuring bouts of diversity. The periodic smack of the buttocks and referring to women as “baby” kept the early ’50s setting afloat. Balancing the language and actions of a pre-sexual harassment era was balanced by Black women scientists experiencing sexism, Asian women flexing their intelligence, and the continued presence of Barbara Gordon and Renee Montoya.
Gordon and Montoya, voiced by Krystal Joy Brown and Michelle C. Bonilla, respectively, were featured prominently this season and were a huge help to Commissioner Gordon (Eric Morgan Stuart). A new facet to the already crime-riddled storyline was added when the Commissioner pivoted from Barbara’s solo act to instead pair her with Flass (Gary Anthony Williams). Officer Bullock (John DiMaggio), who was once partnered with Flass, is now patrolling the streets, bullying children, and doing the bare minimum.
The writing gets better throughout the season, as you’ll see in each episode. There are a few stories that stay step away from the main plot, like “Rocket’s Red Glare” and “The Devil’s Due”, but they’re entertaining at the very least. By the last few episodes of the season, you get to see villain origin stories and unexpected plot twists that make this cartoon better than half the adult dramas on television.
Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 gets a 9 out of 10. If you didn’t think this show could get any better, you’re dead wrong. The Bat is at his best in this second season of crime and fisticuffs. The animation, score, and story are all award-worthy. Prepare to get more than you bargained for this season.
