Atlanta United returns to preseason action today, Wednesday, Feb. 21 against Minnesota United in the second of the team’s three matches at the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, South Carolina. Kickoff from MUSC Health Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the match will be televised on beIN SPORTS.
On Saturday, Atlanta fell to Columbus Crew SC 3-1 in the opening game of the Carolina Challenge Cup. Miguel Almirón scored his first goal of the preseason and Josef Martinez tallied the assist. Pedro Santos and Cristian Martinez scored for Columbus, who added a third via an own goal off a Columbus corner kick.
Minnesota United lost 1-0 to USL side Charleston Battery on Saturday at MUSC Health Stadium. New Charleston signing Ian Svantesson scored the game’s only goal in first-half stoppage time to secure a win for the tournament hosts.
Atlanta and Minnesota both began play in MLS in 2017 and split two matchups in league play. Atlanta earned its first MLS win when it beat Minnesota 6-1 on the road on March 12, yet the Loons took the second meeting 3-2 on Oct. 3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
