The Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF), MLS’ Atlanta United and Soccer United Marketing (SUM) today announced that Venezuela will be Mexico’s rival for the previously-announced #MexTour match on Wednesday, June 5 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the reigning MLS Champions and the 2019 NFL Super Bowl. The game will serve as preparation for this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup and will mark the return to Atlanta of former five-stripes championship manager Tata Martino, who earlier this month was named manager of the Mexican National Team.
Tickets for all Mexican National Team tour matches are now on sale via MexTour.org, ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000. Tickets for the previously announced June 9 game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, presented by Allstate, are on sale via SeatGeek.com.
Venezuela has played Mexico on 13 occasions, with Mexico winning nine times and recording four draws. The two teams last met in June 2016 at NRG Stadium in Houston during the Group Stage of Copa América Centenario, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. “La Vinotinto” will be the third consecutive South American nation Mexico will face during the U.S. Tour. The Mexican National Team will open the tour facing Chile on March 22 in San Diego’s SDCCU Stadium and move on to face Paraguay on March 26 at Santa Clara’s Levi’s® Stadium.
While this will be Mexico’s first game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the squad is no stranger to the Atlanta market, having played several times in the city since its first visit in 2009 as part of the U.S. Tour. The team last visited the ATL in 2016, defeating Paraguay 1-0 in a game witnessed by 63,049 fans at the Georgia Dome. The match could also see a reunion between Martino and his former Atlanta United star forward Josef Martínez. Martínez, who has 46 caps with his national team and is the reigning MLS MVP and Golden Boot winner, would face his former mentor should he be called into Venezuela’s roster in the June FIFA window.
