Following a wildly successful world premiere at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre in December of last year, the Atlanta Ballet has been invited to present its brand-new production of The Nutcracker at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for seven performances from November 27 through December 1, 2019.
On the heels of its Washington debut, Atlanta Ballet brings The Nutcracker back to the Fox Theatre for its final run of performances at the historic venue from December 7-24, 2019. Starting in 2020, Atlanta Ballet will perform The Nutcracker at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
This was former San Francisco Ballet principal dancer Gennadi Nedvigin’s first big production since he came on board as Atlanta Ballet’s fourth artistic director in 2016. Nedvigin’s determination to bring some of the world’s finest artists to Atlanta resulted in a partnership with internationally acclaimed dance maker Yuri Possokhov. Together, the duo attracted a first-class creative team to dream up a one-of-a-kind Nutcracker production. Collectively, this team created a ballet that rivals a Broadway show in terms of production “firepower,” including awe-inspiring sets, groundbreaking projections, stunning costumes and imaginative lighting. Atlanta Ballet’s The Nutcracker comes to life through the creative collaboration of the following design team’s visionary talents:
- Choreography by Yuri Possokhov (Isadora Duncan Dance Award winner for outstanding choreography)
- Set Design by Tom Pye (Tony Award nominee)
- Costume Design by Sandra Woodall (Isadora Duncan Dance Award winner for costume design)
- Lighting Design by David Finn (The Knight of Illumination Award winner in the UK)
- Video/Projection Design by Finn Ross (Tony Award winner)
“We are proud to have been able to bring such a gifted group of innovative masterminds together to create a magical reimagining of this classic holiday tale,” said Nedvigin. “The combination of their specialties will exquisitely enhance the ballet, and will allow audiences to escape from reality and join us in this enchanting, new world that is The Nutcracker.”
Ticket sales from last year’s world premiere of The Nutcracker exceeded all previous sales records in Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker history, proving the production to be a reflection of Nedvigin’s overall vision for the Company and a new and exciting era for Atlanta Ballet.
